Katherine's Vision
I am honored to run for District I
Director and share my vision for addressing the issues facing the ACS.
Communicate
the value of the ACS. Why should one be an ACS member? To address
declining membership, we need to better communicate what we offer as exclusive member
benefits. As the 2018 Chair of the Division of Organic Chemistry (DOC), I focus
on creative ways to build engagement. Let’s personalize ACS communications with
members.
Advance
excellence in chemistry. I have benefited from presenting at ACS Meetings and
publishing in ACS journals, and am excited to directly interact with leaders of
ACS Publications and CAS. Can we educate the public about the beauty and
relevance of chemistry? Should we invest more in interactive, virtual seminars?
Support
ACS members’ careers. As a medicinal chemist at Pfizer, I lead an
interdisciplinary team and serve on our department’s leadership team. The ACS
should be the go-to resource for chemists throughout our careers. Can we increase
accessibility of ACS resources for students, job seekers, and retirees? As a Committee on Economic and Professional Affairs (CEPA)
member and the 2015 Chair of the Northeastern Section (NESACS), I have worked to advance
chemists’ careers. We need to do more for people who have undergone career
changes. Let’s get hard data to understand our members’ needs.
Wisely
apply ACS resources. Serving
on the ACS Board of Directors brings about fiscal responsibilities in
implementing the ACS mission. Time and energy are previous resources: our ACS
volunteers and staff must be confident that what we do is clearly defined, not
redundant, and relevant to our mission.
With your support, I would bring fresh
eyes and experience as a local section and technical division leader, as an active
scientist, and as a person who fosters clear communication and team engagement
in her endeavors. Thank you for your consideration.
